Will people in the hospital who are infected with COVID-19 be given the vaccine? Will it help them?

Question:

Will people in the hospital who are infected with COVID-19 be given the vaccine? Will it help them?

Answer:

People in hospitals with COVID-19 will not receive the vaccine while they are still acutely ill because the vaccine does not cure you of COVID-19 symptoms, it protects you from getting the virus. It is recommended that they receive the vaccine when it is offered to them during the phased rollout, regardless of previous history of COVID-19. It is not known how long immunity lasts after having the disease, so it is important that they are protected and still get the vaccine.

If someone with COVID-19 receives the vaccine it won’t help them get better, but it will help protect them so that if they get exposed again their body will be able to fight off the infection.

Please note that the circumstances around COVID-19 vaccines in BC are changing regularly, so this information may change.
