Why would my mothers dr charge her for a pneumonia shot when she is over 80? I thought it should be free?
There are two types of vaccines that protect against either 13 or 23 types of pneumococcal bacteria. The type of vaccine recommended depends on a person's age and risk factors. These vaccines protect against many, but not all types of pneumococcal bacteria. In BC, Pneumovax® 23 vaccine is publicly funded (free) and recommended for seniors 65 years and over. Your mother may have received it in the past. The pneumococcal conjugate (PCV13) is only free for some people who are at very high risk, but also recommended for others. They would have to pay for it. You can find more information here.
