Why does B.C.'s COVID-19 Immunization Plan not take NACI...

Question:

Why does B.C.'s COVID-19 not take NACI recommendations on social factors : -low socioeconomic status -belonging to a racialized population when it comes to vaccination phases? There has been some specific research that has concluded that certain racialized groups are at higher risk of COVID-19.

Answer:

While the National Advisory Committee on Immunization makes general recommendations for the entire country, it is up to the provinces and territories to make their individual decisions based on their own epidemiology and realities. Furthermore, prioritization of certain populations is based on evolving evidence and has been challenged by limited vaccine supply.

Provinces are drawing on the independent expertise of public health, scientific and medical experts (including NACI) to work out the specific order and priority of who gets vaccinated in their jurisdiction.
