We run a Hydro Excavation and line flushing company, would it be recommended that our employees obtain the Tetanus and Hepatitis A vaccine?
Everyone in Canada should get a Tetanus booster shot every 10 years for the rest of their lives. It is publicly funded (free) and available at most pharmacies. Read more about tetanus here.
Hepatitis A is a virus found in the bowel movements (poop) of infected persons. People with hepatitis A infection who use the bathroom without proper hand washing can pass the virus on to others through food preparation or other hand-to-mouth contact. The disease can also be spread by sexual contact, or sharing of equipment used in illegal drug use, such as needles or pipes.
Hepatitis A can also be spread by drinking contaminated water, or by eating raw or under-cooked shellfish, such as crabs, clams, oysters or mussels that have been contaminated with sewage.
The hepatitis A vaccine is recommended for people at high risk for infection which doesn’t include people working in excavation and line flushing. People who want protection from hepatitis A can purchase it at a pharmacy or travel clinic. Read more about hepatitis A here.
You can find information about adult immunization here.
