Question:

Prevnar13 and pneumovax23 vaccines are inactivated..what is inactivated means

Answer:

Inactivated vaccines are made from microorganisms (viruses, bacteria, or other) that have been killed through a physical or chemical process. These killed organisms cannot cause disease but cause the body to produce "antibodies" which provide immunity or protection against a particular disease. Prevnar® 13 and Pneumovax® 23 are examples of inactivated vaccines. You can find more information regarding how vaccines work here. You will find more information about pneumococcal vaccines here. If you have further questions, please check with your immunization provider.
