My son had the 1st dose of the flu vaccine on December 29th....

Question:

My son had the 1st dose of the flu vaccine on December 29th. He is 7 months old so needs a 2nd dose but the soonest appointment is March 1st (9 weeks later) - is this too late?

Answer:

No, this is not too late for your son to get the second flu shot. Children under 9 years of age who have never received the influenza vaccine need to get two doses at least 4 weeks apart. This is because the first dose of the influenza vaccine “primes” the immune system but may not result in high levels of protection.  So, a second dose is needed to raise their level of protection. The timing of flu season is unpredictable and can vary in different parts of the country and from season to season. Seasonal flu activity has been low this year but can continue to occur as late as May.
