Question:

I want to get my baby flu vaccinated. It is currently Dec 2020 I can book an appointment but we don't know if there will be any available in Jan for the 2nd dose, is that a problem?

Answer:

Children under 9 need 2 doses of flu the first year they receive it for best protection. The first dose of the influenza vaccine “primes” the immune system but may not result in high levels of protection.  The second dose results in the child's immune system producing enough antibodies so they will be able to fight off influenza if exposed. If not exposed to flu, it would not be harmful to miss the 2nd dose, but 2 doses is always recommended if possible. There has been a higher than usual demand this year for flu vaccine due to the pandemic so it is not possible to know how much flu vaccine will be available in January. It may interest you to know that as of mid November, there have not yet been any cases of influenza in the province.
