Question:
I am pregnant and wondering if I should get the Tdap vaccine. Where can I get the Tdap vaccine in BC, and will I have to pay for it?

Answer:
Canada’s National Advisory Committee on Immunization recommended that all pregnant people get the pertussis vaccine to help protect the baby after birth. The Society of Obstetricians and Gynecologists of Canada also recommends that all pregnant people get the pertussis vaccine.

From November 1, 2020, pregnant people in BC can receive publicly funded (free) diphtheria, tetanus and pertussis vaccine Tdap vaccine every pregnancy. The best time to get the whooping cough (pertussis) vaccine is between 27 and 32 weeks of pregnancy. The vaccine may be given earlier and until delivery.

In BC, prenatal care providers will provide the Tdap vaccine, including family doctors and midwives. The vaccine may be provided by specialty prenatal care service providers and community-based pharmacists or at the local health unit. Find more information in our pregnancy section.
