Question:

Had a flu shot two days ago I now have redness and swelling 4 inches from injection site. Is this normal?

Answer:

Common reactions to the vaccine include soreness, redness and swelling at the injection site. Other symptoms can include fever, headache, aching muscles and fatigue that may last 1 to 2 days. Apply a clean, cool, wet washcloth or ice pack to the sore area to reduce discomfort. Pain and fever-reducing medication like acetaminophen or ibuprofen may be helpful if your arm is sore.

If the swelling extends to your shoulder or elbow, please report this to the health care provider that gave you the vaccine. If you have any other questions or concerns, you can also speak with a registered nurse anytime by calling 8-1-1.
