Do I need to get the COVID-19 vaccine more than once? Can it be a one time vaccination?

Question:

Do I need to get the COVID-19 vaccine more than once? Can it be a one time vaccination?

Answer:

Currently, three of the COVID-19 vaccines approved in Canada require two doses (Pfizer, Moderna, AstraZeneca). The second dose boosts your body’s immunity and provides longer term protection so it is very important to get both doses.

The Johnson & Johnson vaccine only requires one dose.

Public health officials are monitoring this, and we will be informed if it becomes clear that another vaccination is needed to maintain our immunity.

We don’t yet know how long immunity lasts from the vaccine, so we can’t say whether more vaccines will be needed in the future. So far, it appears the vaccines provide strong, long-term protection against COVID-19 and its variants. Booster shots are common for many vaccines, and experts will continue to monitor the level of protection that the first vaccine series provides to determine whether a booster shot is needed in the future.

Please note that the circumstances around COVID-19 vaccines in BC are changing regularly, so this information may change.
