Can I still get COVID-19 and pass it on to other people once I’m vaccinated?

Question:

Can I still get COVID-19 and pass it on to other people once I’m vaccinated?

Answer:

Clinical trials and real-world studies have shown that the COVID-19 vaccines are very effective at preventing severe COVID-19. Scientists are still working to figure out how well COVID-19 vaccines prevent vaccinated people from transmitting the virus to others. The good news is that studies suggest that the vaccines do reduce tranmission.  More studies that are currently underway should give us a better answer soon to this question. So, until the majority of people are vaccinated, we should continue to follow public health recommendations, even if we have had our vaccine. Once enough people in the commuity are vaccinated, the risk of transmission after vaccination becomes less of an issue. In the meantime, we’ll need to continue wearing our masks and practicing physical distancing when it is advised.
