Am I able to get a pneumococcal vaccine here in Vancouver?
There are two types of vaccines that protect against either 13 or 23 types of pneumococcal bacteria. The type of vaccine recommended depends on a person's age and risk factors. These vaccines protect against many, but not all types of pneumococcal bacteria. In BC, Pneumovax® 23 vaccine is publicly funded (free) and recommended for seniors over the age of 65. You can find more information here. You can get free vaccines from your local health unit, most pharmacies and some doctors’ offices. You can purchase non-publicly funded vaccines at most pharmacies and travel clinics. Services vary throughout BC.
