My mom is 45 years old and has never had the chicken...

Question:

My mom is 45 years old and has never had the chicken pox. should or can she get the vaccinatiom to prevent it?

Answer:

Adults who who have not been immunized or do not have evidence of immunity to chickenpox should get two doses of the chickenpox vaccine. Adults require serological testing (a blood test) for immunity before getting the vaccine as most adults will be immune. Your mom can get a serology requisition from her doctor.

It is not necessary for those who had chickenpox or shingles at 1 year of age or older to get the vaccine.  For more information about the chickenpox vaccine, visit our Chickenpox page
