Nathan's story: chickenpox

Janet's three-year-old son Nathan suffered an acute stroke in 1997, the result of chickenpox. "On July 5, 1997, Nathan had the world by the tail. On July 6, he was severely disabled," she said. "It's been a long road, with many bumps and obstacles." The virus that causes chickenpox can leave a scar on the brain that, months later, can break off and cause a stroke.
